ASL Clues

You will quickly discover that ASL and English present things differently. It is often the case that the ASL and English do not occur in the same order in the text, and sometimes the ASL Tales stories will use the artwork to provide a bridge for informatin that doesn't easily work in either language.

Sample clip from The Princess and the Pea

The Prince watches the princess go by on skis.

  • Notice the princess standing up.
  • Notice the bear on all fours.
  • Notice the bear running.
  • Notice the prince watching the princess go by.

NOTE: ASL (and all visual languages) allow several things to occur at the same time. In this clip, Pinky is simultaneously being the Prince, the princess and the bear. Her face and the movement of her head creates the Prince, her left hand represents the princess being pulled by the bear, and her right hand shows the bear running.
